Soket Labs and ZenteiQ on Tuesday launched indigenous artificial intelligence foundation models under the IndiaAI Mission, marking another step in the country's push to build homegrown AI capabilities.

EKA-1, developed by Soket Labs, and Dhir 2B and Dhir 5B, developed by ZenteiQ are some of the models unveiled under the initiative.

MeitY Secretary S Krishnan and senior officials of the ministry and IndiaAI were present at the launch event.

The launch is part of the government's push to build a domestic AI ecosystem and develop homegrown foundational AI technologies.

On public release of Indigenous AI foundation models Dhīr 2b and Dhīr 5b, CEO of Zenteiq Professor Sashikumaar Ganesan said, "We have launched two small models. We call them compact models...what we have launched is a two-billion and then five-billion parameter model..."

"We can run these models on our mobile device itself... users can get AI solutions in their hands without even going to the cloud, number one...the mobile app that we are coming up with, that is also going to be in the Play Store as well as the iOS so that the user can download...it will be free...another model that we are going to launch is the 9-billion parameter model..." he told ANI.

Earlier in October, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised that technology must become a tool for inclusive and sustainable development, stressing that democratisation of technology is essential to ensure that no section of society is left behind.

Speaking to Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) Board members at Seva Teerth, he underlined the need to make technology and digital services affordable and accessible, particularly for the global south, and highlighted the importance of taking technology to the last mile to prevent a widening digital divide.
