Gqeberha, Oct 23:

South Africa defeated Australia by an innings and 31 runs in the second Test at Gqeberha, producing a remarkable turnaround to level the series and set up a thrilling decider in Cape Town.

Australia fought hard on the final day, with Travis Head scoring 121 and Scott Boland battling for 166 deliveries to make 40. Rain washed out the first session, raising hopes of a draw for the visitors. However, South Africa claimed the remaining six wickets in the final session to seal victory as the light faded.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada finished with four wickets for 77 runs, while Marco Jansen took the final wicket after his impressive five for 33 on the fourth day had put South Africa firmly in control. All-rounder Wiaan Mulder also played a decisive role, dismissing Head, Boland and Australia captain Pat Cummins with accurate bowling and movement off the pitch. Australia were eventually bowled out for 295.

The victory marked a stunning recovery for South Africa, who had suffered a heavy defeat in the opening Test at Durban. They appeared to be heading towards another loss after slipping to 40 for four and then 110 for six in their first innings at Gqeberha.

However, captain Temba Bavuma’s magnificent 179 transformed the contest. South Africa capitalised on his innings, dismissed Australia in both innings and secured one of their memorable Test victories against their long-time rivals.

The result also evoked memories of South Africa’s notable victories over Australia, including the World Test Championship final two years earlier and their win at the same venue during the controversial 2018 Sandpaper series.

With the series now level, attention turns to Cape Town, where the third Test begins on Tuesday. Both teams will be looking to claim the series in what promises to be a keenly contested finale.
