Bengaluru: Hoskote , an urban outback not long ago and now a bustling suburb some 30km on the eastern flank of Bengaluru, is emerging as a key transport gateway to the tech capital, with a proposed Metro extension, high-speed rail corridors and Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway converging around the eastern satellite town.

BMRCL is preparing a DPR for a 17-km Metro line from KR Pura to Hoskote, adding another public transport link to a corridor already seeing rapid growth in road and rail infrastructure.

Hoskote MLA Sharath Kumar Bache Gowda, who attended a meeting on the proposed extension in the presence of chief minister DK Shivakumar , said: “The CM has given the green signal for the project. Once the DPR is ready, steps will be initiated to take up the project.”

A feasibility report has estimated Metro project’s Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) around 19%, Sharath said, indicating the project’s potential viability as a mass-transit corridor.

On the other hand, the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway is partially operational, with the roughly 100-km Hoskote-Baireddipalle (Andhra Pradesh) section currently open. Other sections are yet to become operational.

Hoskote is also proposed to have an integrated station for the Bengaluru-Chennai and Bengaluru-Hyderabad high-speed rail corridors. A depot, workshops and operations control centre have been proposed at Kodihalli, near Hoskote, as part of the high-speed rail infrastructure.

Authorities are also considering transit-oriented development around the town, including a proposal to acquire about 80 hectares for transport-related infrastructure.

The growing road traffic is adding urgency to the debate over how the KR Pura-Hoskote corridor should be developed. Traffic volumes on NH-75 have crossed 80,000 passenger car units (PCUs), even before the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway becomes fully operational.

Once the expressway is fully operational, pressure on the Hoskote-KR Pura stretch is expected to increase. The proposed Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) connection towards Hosur Road could add further traffic movement, with vehicles from Bengaluru potentially using both routes.

Those advocating additional road capacity estimate traffic could cross 1.5 lakh PCUs in the coming years. They argue that a double-decker structure could separate through traffic from local movements and provide better integration with the STRR.

The idea, however, remains contentious. Earlier proposals envisaged a road flyover at the lower level and Metro on the upper level. Critics question whether combining road capacity with a mass-transit project could undermine prioritising public transport.

BMRCL faced similar concerns over double-decker stretches on the Orange Line. Following a RITES study and opposition from several quarters, it reduced the proposed double-decker section from 37 km to 11 km.

Supporters of a double-decker structure on the Hoskote stretch argue that its traffic conditions are different because of existing congestion and the expected convergence of expressway and STRR traffic.

NHAI is already operating an 83-km stretch of Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR), connecting Dabaspet to Hoskote via Doddaballapur and Devanahalli. The operational stretch is integrated with Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway at Hoskote.

Earlier, NHAI had also proposed widening NH 75 into a 10-lane road from the expressway’s cloverleaf interchange at Hoskote.

Hoskote’s Emerging Transport Network

■ Metro: A proposed 17-km KR Pura-Hoskote Metro line is being taken up for DPR preparation

■ Expressway: Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway is partially operational. The Hoskote-Baireddipalle stretch of about 100 km is currently open

■ High-speed rail: An integrated station is proposed at Hoskote for the Bengaluru-Chennai and Bengaluru-Hyderabad high-speed rail corridors

■ Rail facilities: A depot, workshops and operations control centre are proposed at Kodihalli near Hoskote

■ Transit-oriented development: About 80 hectares is proposed to be acquired at Hoskote for transport-related infrastructure

Why Corridor Matters

■ 80,000+ PCUs: Current traffic volume on NH-75

■ 1.5 lakh PCUs: Traffic could potentially reach this level in the coming years, according to those advocating additional road capacity

■ 17 km: Length of the proposed K R Pura-Hoskote Metro extension

■ 19%: Estimated EIRR cited in the feasibility report

Earlier Plan

Metro had earlier been proposed from Kadugodi: BMRCL had earlier considered extending Metro from Kadugodi, the Purple Line’s terminal station, to Hoskote via Whitefield-Hoskote Road. The corporation is constructing an elevated line of about 420 metres from Kadugodi station to facilitate train turnaround and improve operational efficiency.

Earlier, there were also plans to extend Metro from Kadugodi station, the terminal station of the Purple Line, to Hoskote via the Whitefield-Hoskote Road. BMRCL has taken up construction of an elevated line for about 420 metres from Kadugodi station to facilitate train turnaround and improve operational efficiency.
