Coimbatore is set to boost its Global Capability Centres (GCCs) from over 75 today to almost 200 by 2032, according to a report released on Wednesday.

The joint report by EY and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) projects that the city can attract about 125 new GCCs within six years by leveraging its engineering talent, industrial strength, workforce stability and growing innovation environment.

With a population of 3.8 million, the city boasts over 300,000 technology professionals, 137 engineering colleges, and more than 30,000 STEM graduates entering the workforce annually.

To achieve this growth, the report presents a ‘5R Growth Framework’ that emphasizes attracting companies expanding beyond major metros, building on existing GCC successes, encouraging regional enterprises to establish centres, developing specialised engineering and innovation skills, and scaling current GCC operations.

Manoj Marwah, Partner and GCC Markets Leader at EY India, said Coimbatore has transcended its tier-two city status by demonstrating the capacity to manage large-scale GCC operations.

He pointed out that some GCCs in Coimbatore employ over 1,000 people, indicating its readiness for managing complex global assignments.

V Noushad, Chairman of CII Coimbatore Zone and Managing Director of Walkaroo International Pvt Ltd, noted that international companies are increasingly seeking talent and specialised capabilities outside traditional metropolitan areas.

He added that Coimbatore is positioned to play a larger role in India’s GCC expansion and that the framework provides a practical roadmap for developing a globally competitive ecosystem.

The report also highlighted factors such as low employee attrition, strong educational institutions, affordable office rentals, and supportive state policies as drivers for Coimbatore’s GCC growth ambitions.
