The little town in the UK that is the country's most walkable has been named. The title was awarded following an ordnance survey, revealing the best spots for walking without ruining your trainers, or if you want, somewhere that isn't too hilly or rough.

Ordnance Survey (OS) ran its calculations on everyday places where people live. It analysed routes inside every British town and city and a four-kilometre boundary around each settlement. This involved a combination of national OS data for roads, paths and off-road tracks, together with data on hills and gradients, traffic levels and street lighting. Meanwhile, green space and Met Office weather data were used to help calculate resilience against wind, rain and mud.

Several rankings were then created, with one ranking towns best for walking overall. The winner isn't located in England or Wales, but rather sits in a scenic spot in the middle of Scotland.

Aviemore in the Highlands was named the best town overall for walkers. Sitting in the Cairngorms National Park, this stunning little corner of the globe is known for its close proximity to lochs and green areas.

Despite the number of mountain trails surrounding the town, it is relatively accessible, with plenty of opportunities for all kinds of walkers to enjoy this beautiful scenery.

OS Data Scientist Tom Peterken said: "It was interesting to discover Aviemore coming out on top. It scored well across nearly every category.

"It has flat, accessible routes, tougher climbs, good surfaces, less traffic and routes that cope well with different weather. That balance makes it a brilliant all-rounder, whether you want a gentle stroll or a proper leg-stretcher."

Highlights located close to Aviemore include Loch an Eilein, Loch Morlich, Strathspey Railway, Cairngorm Mountain Resort, and Loch Garten Nature Centre.

Ordnance Survey's Managing Director for Leisure, Nick Giles OBE, said: "Walking is one of the simplest ways to boost our health and wellbeing, and there's no better place to start than right on our doorstep.

"Our towns and cities are packed with great places to explore, helping people build confidence one step at a time before venturing further into the countryside and national parks."

Aviemore is a pretty small town that is rather remote. According to the last Census, there are just over 3,000 people living there.

However, the area is popular with tourists, with plenty of accommodation options in Aviemore for those who want a few days in this stunning national park. Some of the top choices include Coylumbridge Resort Hotel, Badaguish Forest Lodges, and McDonald Aviemore resort, to name a few.
