The globally acclaimed Dhurandhar franchise, starring the charismatic Ranveer Singh, has amassed an impressive ₹3,100 crore around the world. However, its journey in Japan, which began on July 10, hasn’t been quite as triumphant. Despite high hopes, the big-budget action spectacle opened on over 80 screens across Japan but struggled to capture the local audience’s attention.
As the action-packed film made its Japanese debut, trade analysts noted a lackluster start, with the film unable to break into Japan’s top 25 films over its opening weekend. On day one, the film attracted just 449 viewers by 2 p.m. at 57 venues, and the numbers didn’t climb much higher throughout the day, reaching only 900 admissions across 80 locations.
Even with a whirlwind of promotions preceding its release, Dhurandhar couldn’t ignite the expected excitement in Japan. The film’s initial performance indicates that it fell short of joining the ranks of the top ten Indian films with the strongest opening days in the country. To edge into this prestigious list, it needed to surpass the 1,300 admissions mark set by Salman Khan’s Tiger 3which currently holds the tenth spot. Prior attempts, like Pushpa 2also failed to make this elusive list.
Helmed by the talented Aditya Dhar, all Dhurandhar films spring from the creative minds at Jio Studios and B62 Studios, with production credits to Aditya Dhar, Lokesh Dhar, and Jyoti Deshpande. The ensemble cast is a powerhouse of talent, featuring not only Ranveer Singh but also Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Sara Arjun, Rakesh Bedi, Gaurav Gera, Danish Pandor, and more.
