Portugal's difficult start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has generated criticism both on and off the pitch, and the latest controversy surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo emerged not from a match itself but from a fake social media post that managed to fool even his fiancée, Georgina Rodríguez.

Portugal opened their Group K campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo at Houston Stadium, a result that intensified scrutiny on a squad widely regarded as one of the strongest in the tournament. Much of that attention inevitably centred on Ronaldo, whose frustrating performance prompted criticism from pundits and supporters alike.

Speaking during Fox's coverage after the match, former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry questioned Ronaldo's approach during the game.

"One thing that's important, people, please at home: the team needs to score, not you need to score," Henry said.

The fallout from that draw quickly spilled onto social media, where comments made by Paris Saint-Germain midfielder João Neves became the subject of intense debate among supporters.

João Neves' comments sparked a wave of reaction

Neves scored Portugal's only goal against DR Congo and was later asked about Ronaldo's role within the national team setup.

His answer was widely viewed by many observers as a straightforward assessment of the squad dynamic, but some Ronaldo supporters interpreted the comments as a criticism of the Portugal captain.

"We know what Cristiano has done for us, for our national team, and for the world of football. But at this moment, he and we know that he is no different. He is just another player here to help," Neves said.

"He is no different from the others. He is here to contribute, just like all of us."

Although the remarks appeared largely complimentary, social media reaction quickly escalated, with sections of Ronaldo's fanbase taking issue with the suggestion that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner should be viewed in the same way as every other player in the squad.

That reaction soon created the conditions for a separate controversy.

Fake comment falsely attributed to João Neves' girlfriend goes viral

As debate surrounding Neves' remarks intensified, a fabricated Instagram screenshot began circulating online.

The fake post was designed to look like an exchange involving Neves' girlfriend, actress Madalena Aragão. In the screenshot, a fan appeared to leave a hostile comment aimed at Neves, criticising him for not passing to Ronaldo and writing something along the lines of: "Your boyfriend is a retard, tell him to pass the ball to my GOAT."

The fabricated screenshot then showed a supposed reply from Aragão's account that read:

"Tell your GOAT to retire, he's very selfish."

The exchange was entirely fake and originated from an AI-generated parody account impersonating Aragão. However, screenshots of the interaction were subsequently reposted by several sports aggregators, regional outlets and viral social media pages, allowing the fabricated exchange to spread rapidly online.

Unfortunately, Rodríguez appears to have believed the post was genuine and thought she was responding to a real comment from Aragão.

Replying beneath one of the viral reposts, Ronaldo's fiancée wrote in Spanish:

"Wow!! Viene fuerte esta generación!!"

The phrase translates roughly to:

"Wow! This generation is coming through strong!"

The comment quickly attracted attention before Rodríguez later removed it after realising the account and exchange were not authentic.

The fabricated interaction emerged amid growing criticism directed towards Neves from some Ronaldo supporters, who accused the midfielder of not passing frequently enough to the Portugal captain during matches.

The situation became significant enough that Ronaldo subsequently shared photographs alongside teammates, including Neves, in an apparent effort to calm speculation about any division within the squad.

Ruben Dias attempts to calm concerns over Portugal's dressing room

The incident arrived at a difficult moment for Portugal, whose opening draw against DR Congo had already raised questions about the atmosphere surrounding the team.

Reports of tension within the camp have circulated throughout the opening week of the tournament, prompting Manchester City defender Ruben Dias to address the subject directly ahead of Portugal's second group-stage match.

"First of all, I don't think the blame is being directed at just one player," Dias told reporters.

"Obviously, Cris is a major focus of attention, but I think we're all in the firing line at a time like this. But, above all, and quite apart from what I've just said, I don't think anything out of the ordinary is happening.

"It's always been like this whenever I've been here, I believe it will continue to be so in the future and, as such, it's nothing new."

Dias' comments were designed to downplay suggestions of internal conflict, although the continuing focus on Ronaldo has ensured every development surrounding the squad receives significant attention.

Portugal's World Cup campaign remains delicately balanced

The controversy has unfolded against the backdrop of a group-stage campaign that remains far from secure.

Portugal entered the tournament among the favourites but were unable to convert that status into victory against DR Congo, settling instead for a 1-1 draw that left them with work still to do in Group K.

Ronaldo endured a frustrating evening, struggling to impose himself on the match and failing to produce the decisive contribution that has defined so much of his international career.

Portugal now face Uzbekistan at Houston Stadium in a match that could prove crucial to their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds. They will then conclude their group-stage campaign against Colombia on June 28 in a fixture that could ultimately determine who finishes top of Group K.

For now, however, much of the discussion continues to revolve around matters away from the pitch.

With only one point collected from their opening match and qualification still to be secured, Portugal will hope that attention can soon return to football matters rather than the distractions that have followed them through the opening days of the tournament.
