New Delhi: Gujarat Titans defeated Chennai Super Kings by 89 runs in the important match of IPL 2026 and eliminated them from the tournament. Under the leadership of captain Shubman Gill, Gujarat, batting first, made a huge score of 229 runs after losing 4 wickets in 20 overs. In reply, Chennai team completely faltered while chasing the target and were all out for 140 runs in just 13.4 overs.

Unwanted record registered in the name of Chennai Super Kings

With this defeat, an unwanted record was registered in the name of Chennai Super Kings. This is the first time in IPL history that the team failed to make it to the playoffs for three consecutive seasons in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Whereas Gujarat Titans registered their 9th win in 14 matches and scored 18 points and reached second place in the points table.

Chennai had a very bad start. Opener Sanju Samson and wicketkeeper Urvil Patel returned to the pavilion without opening their account. Fast bowler Mohammad Siraj gave the initial blow and turned the match towards Gujarat. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad tried to fight by scoring 16 runs and Matthew Short scored 24 runs, but they could not play big innings.

Shivam Dubey’s aggressive batting

Shivam Dubey, batting aggressively in the middle order, scored 47 runs in 17 balls, which included four fours and four sixes. Anshul Kamboj also added 19 quick runs in the last overs, but due to continuous falling of wickets, Chennai team could not make a comeback in the match. For Gujarat, Siraj, Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan completely destroyed Chennai’s batting by taking three wickets each.

Earlier, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarshan batted brilliantly in Gujarat’s innings. Both of them gave a strong start to the team by making a partnership of 125 runs for the first wicket. Sudarshan scored 84 runs in 53 balls, while Gill played a quick inning of 64 runs in only 37 balls.

After this, Jos Buttler batted in an explosive manner and scored unbeaten 57 runs on 27 balls. There was a partnership of 82 runs for the second wicket between Sudarshan and Butler, which played an important role in helping Gujarat reach the huge score of 229 runs.
