A family-run UK haulage company that first hit the road almost 12 years ago has dropped into liquidation, according to the London Gazette. S Peacock & Son, a haulage and freight company based in Cambridgeshire, fell into liquidation back in March in another blow to the industry.
A Winding-Up Notice was published in the London Gazette back on March 3, but liquidators had been appointed as of February 26. The Gazette explained that the company had been "wound up voluntarily", with Grace Jones and David Perkins of Parker Andrews Limited appointed joint liquidators. It is unknown how many job cuts can be expected at this stage.
Companies House has confirmed that the business is now listed as being in liquidation. Records state that the business, located on Heath Road, Warboys, Huntingdon, was incorporated back in 2014, but the local haulage business has been around longer.
The company formally operated under the name 'John Smith Haulage Ltd', named after founder John Smith. The business was reportedly started with just one Toyota pickup van before expanding to lorries.
The haulage firm was then taken over by S Peacock & Son Ltd, who were already running a business in St Ives. According to their website, the brand is still a "family-run business", with over 30 years of experience on the road.
Services available to customers included a 24/7 general transport operation at a local, national and European level. The company boasts a fleet of 16 vehicles ranging from small vans to 44-tonne lorries and is said to specialise in "hazardous loads"
The Cambridgeshire-based brand once stated its goal was to be the 'first choice' haulage provider across the country. It's not the first haulage company to drop into difficulty with a series of firms struggling in recent weeks.
MJ Haulage Limited, a transport company in Devon, dropped into administration on May 5, with the notice appearing in the London Gazette just days ago.
Meanwhile, Instant Despatch Services Limited, a company run by Loop Logistics, appointed administrators on May 6. The freight business, which had been operating out of Mansard Close, Northampton, was first incorporated almost 24 years ago, back in July 2002.
Nottingham-based Martyn Barratt Transport Limited also entered administration this spring after almost 26 years in business.
