New Delhi: Google is reportedly in talks with the Union government and West Bengal officials to set up a major technology hub in the state, a move that could put eastern India more firmly on India’s digital map. The discussions are said to involve possible investments in digital infrastructure, cloud services, artificial intelligence and data-driven technologies.

Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has held meetings with Google representatives and state officials to explore possible technology and infrastructure projects in West Bengal. No final investment plan has been officially confirmed by Google or the Centre yet, so the proposal is still at the talks stage. Still, the signal is big enough to get India’s tech circles talking.

Why Google’s West Bengal plan matters

For years, India’s big tech story has mostly circled around Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and the NCR region. West Bengal has wanted a bigger seat at this table for some time. A Google-backed project, if it goes through, could change that mood.
