Kitchens are the heart of the home, with people often gravitating toward them during visits and parties. However, keeping a kitchen looking modern can be challenging.
A lot of features that were once beloved by people are now dated and could be ageing your space without you even realising. Daniel Beadle, an expert from Kitchen Warehouse UK LTD, said certain design choices that once upon a time were the height of fashion are now likely making your home look dated. Although afull renovation is not necessary, Daniel recommends making a few simple changes to modernise your space.
His first recommendation is to switch out old, overly ornate cabinet handles. He said: "Ornate designs, heavy detailing, or overly traditional styles can instantly give the impression that the kitchen hasn't been updated in years.
"While these styles were once popular, they don't always translate well in modern homes. They can clash with cleaner lines and make the overall design feel inconsistent."
Switch them out for minimal handles or handleless options.
Daniel said: "Minimal handles or even handleless options tend to feel more contemporary and are much easier to keep looking clean."
Splashbacks are another place where kitchens can look dated. He said: "Small tiles with lots of grout lines, especially in bold or overly intricate patterns, can make a kitchen feel cluttered and outdated.
"What might have looked stylish at the time can quickly start to feel overwhelming."
They are also less practical as they can be harder to clean and maintain. Instead, go for larger tiles or seamless splashbacks.
Lighting is another aspect that shouldn't be overlooked.
Daniel said: "Poor lighting can make even a newly fitted kitchen look dated. Harsh overhead lights or badly positioned fixtures can create shadows and make the space feel less inviting.
"Many older kitchens rely too heavily on a single light source. That kind of setup doesn't work well for modern living.
"Instead, layering lighting is key. Combining overhead lighting with under-cabinet lights and softer ambient options makes the kitchen feel more balanced and up to date."
It's also important to add a splash of colour. Flat grey kitchens have been trendy in previous years, but now they're starting to seem dated.
Daniel said: "The issue isn't the colour itself, but how it's used. When there's no contrast or variation, the space can lack warmth and personality."
To refresh the look, Daniel suggests introducing balance: "Adding natural materials, warmer tones, or subtle colour differences can instantly make the kitchen feel more current."
In a similar vein, it's important to make sure that the finishes in your kitchen make sense with one another.
Daniel said: "When metals, colours, and materials don't complement each other, the kitchen can feel disjointed. It often looks like pieces have been added over time rather than planned together.
"This is especially noticeable with fixtures and fittings. Things like taps, handles, and lighting should feel cohesive, otherwise the whole space can look older than it is."
