Fuel surcharge starts from Rs 299, increases to Rs 899
Mumbai Air India Group is going to impose fuel surcharge ranging from Rs 299 to Rs 899 for domestic flights and from $ 24 to $ 280 for international flights. However, fuel surcharge will not be imposed on some routes. Air India said in a statement on Tuesday that the revised fuel surcharge effective from April 8 will also be applicable on flights operated by the airline’s low-cost subsidiary Air India Express.
The statement said the revision in fuel surcharge on flights to and from Bangladesh and Far East destinations like Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea will be communicated in due course, subject to necessary regulatory approvals.
The airline said that after the government fixed a maximum increase of 25 per cent in domestic aviation fuel (ATF) prices, the group has taken this balanced approach and decided to introduce distance-based surcharge instead of a uniform surcharge domestically. Another domestic airline company Indigo has already increased the fuel surcharge.
Citing the latest data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the airline said that global jet fuel prices have increased to $ 195.19 per barrel in the week ending March 27. By the end of February it was $ 99.40 per barrel. ATF accounts for 40 to 45 percent of an airline’s operating costs.
