Max Verstappen has hinted he's 'near the end' of his Formula One career, as the Dutchman opens up about his future in the sport. Verstappen had won the last four Drivers' Championship titles heading into the 2025 season, but his crown was snatched by McLaren man, Lando Norris.

Verstappen will be desperate to make a return to the top spot in the rankings this year, but he could face complications, as the new engine regulations have thrown a spanner in the works. The Red Bull ace has gone on record to complain about the changes, making an unfortunate comparison to Formula E.

Now, on the eve of the new season, Verstappen has raised eyebrows once again, suggesting the regulations could force him into an early retirement. Speaking to the Up To Speed podcast, he said: "I definitely see myself nearing the end.

"I'd say the new regulations aren't helping to extend my Formula One career, but it doesn't matter, I'm happy with my trajectory, I can easily leave it behind, I have other projects."

Exactly what Verstappen is alluding to when he says 'different projects' isn't known, but he has previously stated he'd take part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Away from racing, Verstappen said that he is also looking forward to spending more time with his family, in particular partner Kelly Piquet and his daughter Lily.

He added: "Who cares when you're 60 or 70 if you won four or 10 titles? I'm getting older and I prefer to spend time with my family before they're gone. It's something I've realised over time. I was recently skiing with some good friends and my family and I realised how fantastic it was to be able to spend several days together, appreciating life.

"I want to live my life; you only live once, and I don't want to spend 25 years driving a car. I want to appreciate what's out there. Maybe I sound dramatic, but I don't want to keep living just to race."

Verstappen will at least be involved in the upcoming 2026 season, which begins in Melbourne next month. Verstappen is set to start the campaign as the second favourite behind Mercedes' George Russell.
