Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Dakota Johnson has offered a stunningly blunt and critical assessment of the modern film industry, declaring that Hollywood is “a bit of a mess” and describing the current state of moviemaking as “really f—ing bleak.”

In a remarkably candid interview with Bustlethe actress did not hold back her frustration, arguing that art is being suffocated by corporate decision-making and a fundamental misunderstanding of what audiences actually want.

The core of her critique is aimed at a system where crucial creative decisions are no longer made by filmmakers and artists, but by committees, executives, and algorithms.

“It is a real bummer. It’s so hard,” Johnson said. “Art does not do well when it’s made by committee. Art is not good when it’s made by committee.”

Johnson’s sharp critique appears to stem from her recent experience with the Sony-Marvel film Madame Weba major commercial and critical disappointment. She stated that after being a part of that machine, she now understands why such films often fail to connect.

“Decisions are being made by committees, and art is not good when it’s made by committee,” she explained. “Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms.”

Reflecting on Madame Web’s poor reception, she added, “I’m not surprised that it has gone down the way it has. I will probably never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world.”

A major source of her frustration stems from what she sees as a lack of trust in the audience’s intelligence. She argued that studio executives mistakenly believe they need to feed audiences “something mindless,” when in reality, viewers are “so smart.”

“My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they’re not,” she stated.

Ultimately, Johnson’s comments paint a picture of an actress disillusioned with the current, commerce-driven studio system. She advocates for a return to filmmaker-led projects, where artistry and a genuine human experience are valued over soulless, committee-approved products.
